Across 2021, local residents worked with visual artist Madhumita Bose to learn new crafting skills, celebrate their identities and connect to make two new community quilts, which will be displayed at Barbican Library for the first time.
Through postal packs where residents could create pieces at home, and in person workshops, Madhumita guided 35 local people to create over 200 textile flowers reflecting their personal memories and identities, which have been sewn together to make the quilts.
Between July & September 2021, workshops took place in Middlesex Street Estate, Mansell Street Estate, Portsoken Community Centre and Barbican Library, and many pieces were made at home at a time when many struggled to attend in-person activities.
The project, and the quilts themselves, aim to celebrate connection in the City across the pandemic, boosting morale at a challenging time and finding ways for local people to connect and get creative.
RSVP to mileculture@gmail.com to join us from 6.15 – 7.15pm on Thursday 20th January 2021 at Barbican Library to see the finished pieces and enjoy some socially distanced refreshments.
After this, they will be displayed at Golden Lane & Portsoken Community Centres.
This project is funded & supported by Culture Mile and organised by Forget Me Not Memory Café.
