From the wild debauchery of St Bartholomew’s Fair to the 20th anniversary of one of London’s most influential night clubs fabric, the area has a fascinating role in the culture of the city, which Culture Mile Nights celebrate through everything from pub quizzes to immersive live performance, from poet and performer Joshua Idehen through to interactive theatre makers Coney.
Oi Barman! in the City
with Poet in the City
Oi Barman! is a lovesong to bar life. To low pay and late nights; to our fellow champions in spirits, and brethren in tips. Spoken word artist Joshua Idehen draws on a decade as a bartender in London’s liveliest cocktail bars, to capture a cross section of London life; from skinheads to bankers, office parties to Nigerian hen dos.

In medieval taverns, Victorian saloons, underground wine bars and converted warehouses, the spirit of ancient London revelry lives on in this alluring part of town. With the area on the cusp of major change, follow Tom Bolton on a walk around Smithfield’s many pubs to explore the area’s layered history of trials and executions, riotous summer fairs, buried rivers, lost neighbourhoods, slaughterhouses and markets - ending, of course, with a drink.
