The Monument

A permanent reminder of the Great Fire of 1666, the Monument commemorates one of the most significant events in London’s history.

The Monument commemorates one of the most famous events in London’s history. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Dr Robert Hooke and completed in 1677, this 160ft high column remembers the Great Fire of London of 1666 and celebrates the city which rose from the ashes.

Situated just moments from the Fire’s starting point on Pudding Lane, visitors are invited to climb the 311 spiral steps to enjoy spectacular views over the city. The learning programme enables schools to dig deeper into the story of the Great Fire, its commemoration, and the history of The Monument itself.
